The Cannonball Read

A lovely man that I have never met or indeed spoken to named Brian Prisco has agreed that I may participate in the Cannonball Read.  If you’re here you have definitely liked from his blog so I expect you to know what that read is but for the short-term memory impaired here are the rules:

  • 100 books
  • 1 year
  • all books to be over 200 pages
  • collections of short stories to contain at least six stories
  • no graphic novels

And, to complete the terrifying circularity, here’s the link to his blog: The Gospel According to Prisco.  He details all the other brave souls taking part and the reasons for so doing.  Me?  I just like reading.

Background: I am a stupid burnout from a dumb career whose darling husband is sufficiently loving and sufficiently high earning to enable her to spuriously and unjustifiably do no work whatsoever.  You heard me – I’m even terrible at housework and he prefers to wind down by doing the cooking of an evening so I really don’t have to do anything.  And you know, I really don’t do much.  I’ve started a creative writing course because that’s what useless ex-archaeology students do and I have a nasty feeling it’s going to be an uphill slog because the teacher a) reminds me of my mother and b) wants us to find our inner creativity and told us to write a haiku and ‘don’t worry if you get the right amount of syllables, just listen to the flow”.  Yikes.  I get roped into stuff because I’m awfully bossy and generally convinced I’m the only person who can do the job correctly and everyone is happy to let me meander along in that nonsensical belief because it lets them off the hook.  Oh yes, and I’m British and living in Britland, a West Country girl living the high life in lovely London.  I dream of country mansions and large dogs.

And the name?  Mrs Walker is my favourite character from a book by Jane Smiley called Moo.  She’s who I dreamed of being when I grew up and, if you’ve read the book, that desire ought to tell you all you need to know about who I actually am.

Anyway.  To the books!
